Welcome To Hell… The Dublin Liberties Beer Cask Night!

The best possible way how to celebrate a little Friday:

1. Request a day off multiple times until your manager gets sick of you and gives you a day off.

2. Irish summer is here so make sure to stay hydrated with some water. Water of Life.

3. Go to The Dublin Liberties Distillery for an exciting new BEER CASK Whiskey launch.

4. Have a blast. Enjoy!

You may have noticed that I like beer. (Do you, yeah?) In case you haven’t, there you go: I do like beer. (Do I, yeah?) Would you believe!

And even more if it goes hand in hand with an exciting project like the one by The Dublin Liberties in collaboration with Irish craft beer breweries.

Here’s the photo collection from Thursday night spent in The Dublin Liberties Distillery.  (Yeah I can’t leave the gaff without the camera. At least something (highlighting something, not someone) has to remember what was going on! Chapter ‘Let’s put this puzzle together’ thanks to technology begins now!

Welcome to Hell

So apparently part of the Liberties area earned this nickname centuries ago. Living in the area myself – I’m not quite sure if it has changed since then! (Hahaha, it’s actually a really cool spot.)

IMG_2374_editedAlways a warm welcome in The Dublin Liberties.

The Cellar rocks, full of Dots!

Dot

This time I’ve decided to exchange my broofing sessions for one that was under the ground. There is a special secret cellar in one of the Dublin’s finest off licences. And we had a great time occupying this space on Friday night, all the lads that appreciate the beauty of a good craft beer.

Hidden in the hearth of a beautiful Blackrock area, awarded National Off-Licence of the year, Blackrock Cellar has many reasons to be visited. IMG_1494_edited

Blackrock Cellar hosts many exciting events, and one of them that caught my attention this time was Monthly Beer Club with Shane from Dot Brew – and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world! Shane is a specialist for barrel-aged beer and he truly knows his stuff.

We arrived at beer o’clock, just about the time to find our seats and taste the first sample…

IMG_1474_editedShall we start with a rum barrel-aged lager? Sure, why not! Everyone who touches the craft beer will not be super excited about the lagers so much anymore. It always is a challenge to make something different. And he did. Shane brought a bit of a modern twist on a lager by putting it into rum barrels – and it does the job. Easy drinking lager with a bit of madness going on with all those rum notes! Very interesting start, and as he announced – it will get stronger and darker…

Introducing new cans that were released early this month, we enjoyed the beauty of the can and were more than ready to taste the beauty inside of them! (Awesome photos of the cans taken by We Are Runners)

dot

It was SO FAR SO GOOD, as was also the name of the next sample landing in our glasses from Dot’s brand-new cans. 3.2% is what you want with the summer coming – keeping its full-bodied flavour and nice citrusy twist in the background. Well, so far so good for us!

IMG_1481_editedDevious 6.6% and honest STRAIGHT UP IPA was waiting for us on our next stop. A proper IPA kick, not extremely fruity, smooth and soft body with a tiny bitter echo. Perfect combo of Idaho7 and Centennial hops succeeded to make us hoppy. So far, even better!

The whole evening was perfectly accompanied with bits and pieces to have with your beer, but we had some special combos that made perfect couples for selected beers. It truly is amazing how one can compliment another.

Cheese&crackers is a combination everyone knows, and if you add on a home-made mango chutney and pair it with a nice Saison – it’s a win-win for everyone!IMG_1482_edited

I would normally not look for a Saisons – they can be so weird sometimes. Shane – the main boss on the farm wanted to make sure that his farm workers will not stay thirsty over the summer time coming, so he brewed one quality Saison for all of us. Aged in multiple barrels – rum, bourbon and whiskey barrels. Blend IV. I smelled the beer. Nicely fruity on the nose. All aromas of tropical fruits that make you feel like being on holidays. I had a taste and was so happy about how easy drinking beer it actually was. It tasted so fresh and a perfect for summer to quench the thirst. I was blown away when Shane announced that it is 7.4%. Better to quench the thirst in one go, before the brain blowing happens!IMG_1488_edited

IMG_1498_edited2

How about a ginger cake paired with a rum barrelled dark red ale? This second batch of RUM RED DARK (8.9%) was  according to Shane much more balanced than the first one – adding extra chocolate malt to balance out the rum character and bring out the beer character. It went perfectly well with Eoin’s delicious home-made chocolate ginger cake, especially going light on a carbonation which brought loads of flavour to play the solo part on the main stage. Feeling like a pirate, huh?

DRINKING AFTER MIDNIGHT made us all rebels – we drank it before midnight! Paired with a dark chocolate filled with liquid caramel, this foreign (like me) stout was a fresh brand-new brew and we had an honor to be Shane’s guinea pigs. Keep an eye out for this one lads, everyone has to have it in the fridge, because you don’t want to end up not having a proper beer to drink after midnight. ‘Light and easy’ (haha) with 8.2% ABV, if you have a chocolate to pair it with!

IMG_1465_editedThe most popular combination of the evening was definitely tiramisu made by Katarina paired with Dot’s JOEL’S VIETNAMESE COFFEE STOUT BATCH III – our desert after the main dinner. I am always shouting that I do not enjoy coffee flavour in my beer at all, as I’m not a coffee person. This tiramisu pairing made it easy – as tiramisu pushed the coffee flavour in it into a sweeter level, which was great. The weird thing about it was that the head was not willing to stay on the beer, even though it looked promising while pouring it into a glass – it  just disappeared in a second. There is a reason for it – the beans are too oily to keep a longer lasting head on. You will have to hurry up – I don’t know about Katarina’s tiramisu treat but I know for sure that Dot’s stout is available in Blackrock Cellar and they have ONLY 1 case left. Otherwise you’ll miss out and you don’t want that, do you?

IMG_1464_edited

IMG_1489_editedIt always amazes me when I see so many people excited about the beer at one spot. Loads of positive energy and enthusiasm floating in the room keeps you going. That’s the Blackrock Cellar for you. No wonder why they got a title of a National Off-Licence of the year. I wanted to know why, I went there, and I couldn’t close my mouth. If you enter the shop, you’ll be amazed. It’s like entering the entire universe of craft beer and wine on its own. Like being a kid in a candy store. You don’t know where to look first. But what makes this place honestly the best is the love and passion for what they are doing. For us – city centre lads, it is a tiny bit far away. But have a little trip down there and you will not regret. The whole area is so charming and beautiful that one would want to live there forever!

IMG_1491_edited.jpg

Cheers to more beer club sessions like this, and see you in the next one!

Are you cooking a pizza?

In every real man there is a child that wants to hear a good-night fairy-tale. This one is for all our inner children. Have a pint of milk (beer) while reading it!

Warning: this story is a pure fiction of the author. If you’ll find any similarities with a real life, get over it! It’s just a coincidence.

Once upon a time there was a teeny-tiny little brewery in Drumshanbo, county Leitrim. It appeared to be a Wednesday like any other one.

PicsArt_06-21-11.32.04‘What are we cooking today, Francesco?’ asks Mark, known as a right hand of the head brewer.

‘American Pale Ale, amico mio, and I’m telling you now – it’s gonna be a blast!’

So the lads jumped on it and started to brew this brand-new beautiful golden liquid treasure…PicsArt_06-21-11.36.18

2 hours later…

Martin, known as another right hand of our Italian head brewer (yes, he has exceptional amount of right hands! And usually left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is up to, and that can’t happen.), is coming back from his hell of a journey, delivering kegs for all thirsty people in the country.

‘Howya lads, are we cooking a pizza today?’PicsArt_06-21-11.45.56

‘Mamma mia!’ Francesco shouted and all the lads run to him immediately to see what happened. ‘Who did this?!’

‘Who did what?’ asked Mark.

‘Who put the basil into my beer?!’

‘Oh…was it a basil? You told me toPicsArt_06-21-11.39.34 throw in the hops, so I did! It was green, so I put it in!’ said Mark making puppy eyes on Francesco.

‘It was a basil for my pasta! What am I gonna have for my lunch now?!’

‘Calm down, will ya? They say the beer is a liquid bread, have a pint then!’

PicsArt_06-21-11.55.37

And what is the lesson, dear children? Never dance around the brewer’s pots, otherwise somebody is going to stay hu(a)ngry.

So this is the story of Carrig’s new Special Brew. Well, not really. I was just joking. (Although the brewery really smelled like a pizza place and Francesco loves his pasta – that’s true!) It was planned, and it went well. And now you can find the proof in Bar Rua or in Tanyard Lane.PicsArt_06-21-11.47.31

Have a taste.

Smell it.

It’s a Basil Blast!

Don’t be too scared of basil – Centennial and Simcoe hops fought their way through and basil took over the tasty finish of the beer.

And have you heard the great news? We are in a Christmas mood today in Bar Rua. Come down for pints to celebrate Indie Beer Week with all our crafty diamonds for less than 5 bucks a pint! UNREAL BARGAIN, because we love craft beer!

***FREE PINT ON ME FOR THE FIRST PERSON WHO COMES TO ME IN BAR RUA TODAY WITH A SPECIAL SECRET CODE: “čučoriedka”! (with a proper pronunciation, haha)***

You really don’t want to miss that, do you?

IMG_5671

PS: Mark actually knows the difference between basil and hops.

See you later, beer heads!

Sám doma a stratený v Írsku.

Veru.

A pivných kajnšmetke. Príručka Dublin a okolie v kocke, trojdňový itinerár.

Spartan Race – Punchestown

Možno tu neboli strmé behačky do kopcov, avšak náročnosť prekážok to vyvážila! Dvere máte otvorené všetci, už jedného člena do tímu máme! Aro!

Wishlist:
Ochutnať Guinness – niekoľkonásobne splnenô.
Odbehnúť závod – splnenô!

War Memorial GardensIMG_5181

Ako inak začať nádhernú slnečnú sobotu, ak nie návštevou krásnych rozkvitnutých parkov a záhrad? Írsko je tým povestné a my sme si ako prvú zastávku zvolili práve Irish National War Memorial Gardens.

Stone Brewing – Exalted IPA

Pivné raňajky so slnkom tancujúcim v korunách stromov v Dubline je to, čo chceš každý deň!

Phoenix Park

New England IPA od írskeho pivovaru White Hag

Ja som takto poskromne ostala pri zemi a sŕkala si New England IPA, ktorá ulahodila mojím sladkým chuťovým pohárikom a pripomínala mi džús. Ideálna voľba pod rozjasnenou írskou oblohou!

Wishlist – navštíviť park – niekoľkonásobne splnenô!

Nedeľný Beer Club – Pivo. Riska. Jenga.

A veľhory pivných ochutnávok.

Teeling Whiskey DistilleryIMG_5399

No nabudúce svoju návšetvu pekne krásne počkám priamo v bare.) My sme si zvolili Guinness akadémiu a načapovali sme si vlastné pivečko, a potom sme len zbežne nakukli do baru, keďže bolo príliš teplo a turistická roláda. Certifikáty máme a ja sa asi konečne začnem uchádzať o prácu v bare, haha!

Pivné menu:

Guinness, Guinness, Guinness!

A túto premiéru neskôr zopakoval v bare IdlewildIMG_5536, tentokrát v kombinácii s pivkom, pretože whiskey a pivko ide občas ruka v ruke.

Wishlist:

Patrik si to vychutnal naplno.

Eighties Baby, yeah!

Let’s start with a quick test. Read this article only if you can tick at least two of the following categories:

  • You like beer.
  • You are an eighties’ baby.
  • You like beer.

Done. Success?

Now play your favourite song from 80s…IMG_4955

Which one is yours?

Yesterday we had Christmas again (everyday is a Christmas Day!) in Bar Rua. We got a generouIMG_4976s delivery from our Carrig Brewing Company. And there is something special hidden there, it looks like a baby! Sure, it is – Eighties Baby IPA. We are very happy because this beer was flowing down the throats of our great customers with a speed of light. It was a limited edition in 2017 but thanks to its popularity it is coming back today in a new pretty dress and improved recipe. ‘The Secret’ of Francesco, a head chef. Pinch of this, pinch of that and tadaaaa – beautiful IPA for all of us!

Like the boys from Guns N’ Roses are singing – Welcome to the Jungle! Our giraffe is sticking her head into your glass and waiting for your reaction. Have a sip… You like it, don’t you?

IMG_4959

There is a reason for that.

Once upon a time, somewhere in Washington, there was a hops farm. While there were plenty of hops growing, a pretty different one appeared growing alongside. A bit smaller, kind of yellow-ish. It showed an exceptional ability to make nice beers and thus it got an exotic Spanish name. Its name is Amarillo.

Amarillo has always been adventurous and h(o)appy. One beautiful morning Amarillo decided very spontaneously to go for a little trip to see the world, put on its travel shoes and ended up far away in county Leitrim, Ireland. Amarillo liked it so much so it joined our beer crew in a small family brewery – Carrig. As it stood out of the crowd for its origin and appearance, a lot of hops fell in love with him at the first glance. It was a hoppy Casanova well-known for his love affairs, but one of them became very serious. Its name is Yellow Sub, a very attractive hops from Germany. They made a baby. Eighties Baby!

IMG_4987

It is summer, baby!

You need a pint, baby!

Have a pint of Eighties Baby, baby!

Explosion of citrus and fruity aroma that will not disappoint you with its fresh fruity flavour. Medium bitter, beautiful golden to pale orange colour. Innocent hint of pineapple sweetness in the background. Eighties Baby is a holiday in your glass. This is our summer beer…

IMG_4984

Go on, don’t stay thirsty just looking at the picture… You know where to find us!

And don’t wait too long, Rhuaíri is a very thirsty mascot…
